We are a 182 acre dairy farm milking 175 mainly pedigree Jersey cows.We calve in two batches, the main group start calving in February and calve for twelve weeks, and this allows us to make good use of the spring grass. In the past three years we have also started calving in the autumn starting in September and going on again for twelve weeks. The main reason for doing this is because through our buying group Torridge Vale we supply Stapleton farms who us our milk to make their yoghurt and Sainsburys Taste the Difference ice cream. This year we have gone mad and replaced our old milking parlour and this has made life a lot easier, instead of milking for eight hours a day we can now do the job in less than four, this means there are more hours in the day for all the other jobs that used to get put of until another day.
